Dear Students,

I would like to welcome you to the Koç University English Language Center (ELC). This website has been designed to inform you of the mission, structures, and policies of the ELC. I hope that you will take the time to familiarize yourself with the information contained herein.

The mission of the ELC is to prepare Koç students for academic success at the university level. Since Koç is an English-medium university, we offer courses in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. We also offer an Academic and Life Skills course (ALIS) to prepare students for the more general challenges and opportunities of university life. Our main goal is to provide students with the English-related skills, as well as the more general academic and personal skills, necessary to make the most of their experience as Koç students.

We wish you the best both here in the ELC and in your later academic pursuits, and ask that you bring to your ELC instruction the necessary commitment to ensure your academic success.

• Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi Çeviribilim Bölümü TOEFL Sınav Merkezi

When students first come to university, they take the placement exam. According to the results of this placement exam, they are assigned to their classes. If they get 74 and above in the placement exam, then they can take the Institutional TOEFL (ITP) exam administered by the ELC to pass on to their departments. The requirements to be exempted from the English Preparatory Program are as follows:

 -     Students with TOEFL/TWE score of 550/4 or above will be promoted to their academic programs, regardless of their ELC GPAs.

-     Students with an ELC GPA of 2.00 or above and a TOEFL score of 537 or above will be invited to take the Speaking (KUEPE-S), and Writing (KUEPE-W) exams; those who score at least 3 out 5 in these exams will be promoted to their academic programs. Those students (with an ELC GPA of 2.00 or above) who have already scored 537 or above in earlier TOEFL exams can directly take the Speaking (KUEPE-S), and Writing (KUEPE-W) exams without taking the TOEFL exam at the end of spring semester. Similarly, those students (with an ELC GPA of 2.00 or above) who have already scored 550 or above on earlier TOEFL exams but failed to score 4 or above on the TWE can directly take the Writing exam (KUEPE-W) and be promoted if they receive 3 out of 5 on KUEPE-W.

A similar set of rules will be implemented at the end of the Summer 2011 semester if we determine that the General Language Knowledge component of KUEPE is not ready by then.

OUTSIDE EXAM SCORES  

Students may also present external exam scores to be exempted from the ELC.

TOEFL PBT 550 out of a possible 677 / 4 out of a possible 6  

TOEFL IBT 79-80 out of a possible 120 and 18/20 for the Writing Section

IELTS (Academic Module) 6.5 (minimum of 5 per section) out of a possible 9

KPDS / ÜDS 87 out of a possible 100

The ELC reserves the right to make an investigation about an exam score, refuse suspicious external exam scores and require students to take the University’s Institutional TOEFL exam. For such scores to be accepted, students’ official score reports should be mailed to the University by the external institution, which has administered the exam and the score reports should be within the past three years at the outside limit, depending on the validity period of each exam.
